Hooter's in Guam

For the first time in my life I went to a Hooter's yesterday.  My friend Jen, pictured below, wanted everyone to go to Hooter's for her birthday, so I went.  Up until now, I have purposely not supported this establishment, because I think it is demeaning to the fairer sex.  I mean if you have to have half naked women for servers to bring in the customers then what does that say about your food?  I guess I didn't really expect what I saw after arriving at Hooter's yesterday.  These girls were REALLY half naked.  And the orange shorts were way too short (with butt cheeks showing) and the girls constantly had a wedge!  The shirts were all one size too small.  IT WAS GROSS!  So, I guess the hostess has to wear clothes, and I think she was totally self conscious about being the only person with sleeves on.  She was strutting around the restaurant like she was on a runway in Paris.  I think that I am scarred for life, and I doubt that I will ever eat at a Hooter's again.

Guam Fact - proper shoe terminology

Being from the Southeast, I am accustomed to calling flip flops either flip flops or sandals.  Here in Guam, they are not referred to as flip flops...it is either zories or slippers.

Seabee Ball

Last night, I and several RED HORSE folks attended the Seabee Ball.  The ball occurs yearly to celebrate the birthday of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), and the Seabees (Mobile Construction Battalions).  Basically, it is a ball just for engineer types.  The AF doesn't have anything that specific; they just do a generic AF ball for everybody in the AF.  It was show of support for the AF engineers to come to the Navy engineering ball.   And, everybody had a good time.  Since I used to work at NAVFAC and I'm married to AF engineer, I knew folks from both the Navy and AF in attendance!  It is always fun to see all the military dressed up in the fancy uniforms!  Unfortunately, I didn't have a ball dress for the occasion, so I had to wear an old bridesmaid dress (Laura Oliver's wedding).  I am going to go shopping, so I'll be prepared for the next event...

Trivia for Charity

Habitat for Humanity hosts a quiz night fund raiser yearly, and it was last night. So, I got a team of six together to head over to the Marriott for the games. Before the games started, dinner was served and you had to buy your own cocktails. This cocktail hour before the games start was filled with large amounts of trash talking and threats to other teams. Our table was right next to the Navy team that I was a member of last year and right next to some current AF coworkers. There were over 50 teams, so the competition was pretty stiff! My team consisted of a couple engineer friends and fellow spouses. Our team wanted to separate ourselves from the rest, so we dressed up in green for St. Patrick's Day.  Of course you can't see it, but I had a lighted shamrock necklace on!  We even had some green/shamrock table decor.  Surprisingly right before the games started, my team won lunch for two gift certificates for each member, because I paid early...that was $36 bucks per team member!

Trivia categories included cooking, math, science, biggest to littlest, grammar, and a photo category. We were probably at the low end of the point scale by the end of the night, but we didn't have any Chamorro or Filipino folks on our team. They throw in local trivia each year...I will have to recruit a local for next year's trivia night. We did have a great time and I am still irritated about one question:

You had to calculate the amount of ingredients to use when splitting a recipe for mint ice cream. I did the math and got 3.6 cups. And of course, you cannot measure 3.6 cups or 3 3/5 cups of something with conventional kitchenware. So, I rounded up to the next easiest measurement 3 2/3 cups which would be 3.66 cups. I thought this was a reasonable assumption, but the judges wouldn't accept my answer. I guess I can try again next year!

Kitty Anxiety?

So to my surprise, Miss Ypao put her favorite kitty toy in the litter box. GROSS!  Luckily, I had just changed the litter, so I took the toy out, dusted it off, and put on the floor. Then, the next day she did it again! I have never heard of a cat doing this, AND Ypao is my 6th cat (not counting Margaret's cat Chester). But, she is the only girl cat that I've ever owned.  What does a toy in the litter box mean...kitty anxiety?

She is also becoming more and more independent with age, although she has to be in the bathroom while I'm in the shower.  Without making a peep, she sits on the toilet tank every morning during my shower.  As soon as I get out, she hops down and goes on about her business.  Weird?

Living Solo

So, I am making it.  Here are some of the changes I've made since Brian deployed:

I've had to rethink buying groceries. 

I need to rethink the cooking...the leftovers are killing me! 

I bought a stool to reach things in the top of the cabinets.  

I clean the house less often!

I talk to the cat.

I've had to reteach myself how to proportion the morning coffee...Brian used to make the coffee.

I sleep slap dab in the middle of the bed.

I have to take the trash out to the herbie curbie and the herbie curbies to the street.

I did the taxes.

And worst of all, I have to spray the boonie bee nests. :(

Sunrise

Now that we've moved across the island, we have a totally different view.  We now get sunrises over the Pacific Ocean versus the sunsets we used to get over the Philippine Sea.  Check out this morning's sunrise that I enjoyed over my coffee.
